Over & Out, George

From Paul

R.I.P. George Carlin:
Of all the George Carlin's routines over all the years, "I'm a Modern Man" is my favorite. It's not political; it could hardly offend anyone. It's just a marvelous bit of wordsmithery. Poetic. Funny. Smart. See it on You Tube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm93FwZXhVg

I'm hanging in;
There ain't no doubt.
And I'm hanging tough;
Over and out.

*****************
Heat Wave: Yikes, it was hot in L.A. this past weekend. Triple-digit hot. People flocked to the beach. Here they are.
No, wait! That's Coney Island in 1940. But you get the idea.
***************************
We're not the only dimwits: You thought Americans were stupid just because we can't find Iraq (or Nebraska) on a map: Sorry, Jacqueline, but Brits are dim, too. A recent poll revealed that nearly one quarter of Britons surveyed thought Winston Churchill was a fictional character. More than half believed Sherlock Holmes was real. Congratulations, then, to the fiction writer who penned:

"Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never, never -- in nothing great or small, large or petty. Never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense."

  1. Yes, we lost a great thinker when George passed. As a boy I had all his albums; but there was only one I could listen to if my Mom was around. It was Face On/ Face Off....a pre Occupation:Foole album.....Some feel that George had become more caustic, and in an embitter life sort of way, over the last decade. Some may think his comedy is too depressing. Nay, I say. From Wonderful Wino to the Over and Out diddy you posted, George was there to keep "them" from dummying ourselves down.....to think outside the box [long before that was some catchy "new" idea]. His humour is and will be enduring. He and his comedy always made you think. BRAVO for that.

    My favourite Churchill quote is really one I try to embody and live by daily, "We make a living from what we get. We make a life from what we give."

    Thanks, George, for all the laughs you've given to so many.

  2. I loved his 7 words routine, but even funnier were the two "two-way words." I saw his recent interview on Keith Olbermann and was struck with how grandfatherly he looked.

  4. I'll miss old George, but at least he left words we can all go back to and marvel at. Same goes for Winston. And I'd like to know where the 1/3 who think he's fiction actually come from and how old they are. However, I am now walking round in shock - you mean Sherlock Holmes was a made-up-in-someone's-head guy? Oh, sad, sad hot little day. Time to go to the beach and hang.
